Some Java Help

This page does not have the solution to all your java problems, only the most common problem. Java problems for the average computer users started when Sun sued Micro$oft over their java virtual machine. Since Sun Java and Micro$oft vitual machine are both free, we need a legal expert to explain why billionaires are having million dollar lawsuits over a free product. The only thing computer users actually want is for java applications to work. Java applications written by competent java programmers will work using either program, unfortunately most of the java on the web is not writtem by competent programmers. Hopefully that statement offended 90% of the java programmers, you deserve to be offended. Now I can offend the self proclaimed experts who say get "Sun java". New and average users should NOT "get Sun java" because there are too many places where it just does not work, and a multitude of places where it might work for advanced users but the average newbie will not know what to do.

What does work for new and avarage users is having an updated version of Micro$oft virtual machine. To find out if you have the latest virtual machine: Go to start, then run, and type "wjview" without the " then click OK. A window should pop up and the first line should say "Microsoft (R) Command-line Loader for Java Version 5.00.3810" If you get a message that says "cannot find" you'll need to download and install three(3) files, if you get a different version number you'll have to download the updates.

Micro$oft virtual machine, original install file.        Install first

Micro$oft virtual machine, update install file.         Install second

Micro$oft virtual machine, update install file.         Install third

For the parinoid you can download the third file which updates to 5.00.3810 from Micro$oft Here

There is another way for dial up users (or anyone) to get virtual machine without downloading the 15MB of files found here. Look under your drink or in your snail mail, or trash can or any other place which you might find a copy of the CD for AOL 9.0 The install files for virtual machine are located in D:\AOLTECH (note if D: is not your CD rom drive use the appropriate letter) Be careful when doing this, make sure the CD does not auto-start and take care to not click the wrong file by accident or you'll end up with AOL on your computer. There are several install files in D:\AOLTECH, the names do tell you which one is for your particular version of windows.

If you do encounter one of the rather rare web sites with java that was written to work with Sun java and not virtual machine, you can get the latest version from Sun here That is if you really want to see it. Using both versions of java is possible, however using both is not for newbies or people who don't realize that they're a newbie. The easiest way to use both is done by using two browsers. Use Sun with Netscape/Mozilla/Opera etc. and Micro$oft virtual machine with Internet Explorer.

Any geeks who like to tweak, disagree or argue tell someone who might listen to you. This page is for the people who want things to work and don't care why. Homepage
